North West Transport Hub, Derry

Consarc were appointed by Translink as conservation architects within a multi-disciplinary team for the North West Multi-Modal Transport Hub. The project focused on restoring the Grade B1 listed former railway station at Bond’s Hill, one of Northern Ireland’s finest examples of railway architecture, designed by John Lanyon and built between 1873 and 1875. The station suffered bomb damage in the 1970s, closed in 1980, and fell into decades of decline. Vacant and derelict, it was listed as a ‘Building at Risk’ until the Hub project provided a sustainable new use.

The scheme created a modern transport gateway for the North West, combining the restored station building with new rail platforms, tracks, a bus turning circle, car park, and a greenway linking the site to Ebrington Barracks and the city via the Peace Bridge. Consarc led the conservation of the main building, working closely with stonemasons, specialist roofers, brickwork restorers and joiners to retain its original character while introducing contemporary facilities. Delivered in two phases, the first reopened the station before completing the public realm and parking areas. This multi-award-winning scheme has transformed a historic building into a vibrant, fully operational transport hub that honours its heritage while serving modern travel needs.
