Stone by Stone: The Restoration of Glenstal Abbey
Consarc Conservation was appointed in January 2020 to carry out a detailed condition survey of Glenstal Abbey, a 19th-century working monastery and boarding school in Murroe, County Limerick. The sandstone façade was severely deteriorated, with risks of falling masonry and water ingress causing damage inside. The survey produced a prioritised schedule of repairs, allowing the Abbey to plan a phased restoration while remaining fully operational.
Phases 1 and 2, completed in May 2022 and October 2024 respectively, focused on stabilising the building envelope by replacing damaged masonry, stopping water ingress, and carrying out essential roof repairs. Phase 3 is currently underway, with completion expected in March 2026. This carefully managed conservation programme has already improved the Abbey’s condition and appearance, safeguarding its fabric to support the monastic community and school for years to come.
