Cashel Palace Hotel, Co. Tipperary

Consarc acted as Conservation Architects for the sensitive restoration and extension of Cashel Palace Hotel, an 18th-century building designed by Edward Lovett Pearce around 1732. Originally the residence of the Church of Ireland Archbishops of Cashel, the project carefully refurbished the historic Palace while adding a new extension to provide extra guest accommodation, function spaces, and a spa and leisure centre. Consarc advised the lead architect on all conservation matters, ensuring that the new work respected the character of the listed building and its surrounding structures, including the gate lodge, former schoolhouse, coach house, historic walls, and other protected features within the Palace grounds.

Key challenges included upgrading the Palace to meet modern fire regulations and improving energy efficiency without affecting the historic fabric. Works included limecrete floors with underfloor heating and breathable wall and ceiling insulation, enhancing comfort while safeguarding the building’s long-term condition. The project also involved landscaping, additional car parking, and improvements to the public realm, strengthening the site’s accessibility and appeal. Completed in December 2021, Cashel Palace Hotel reopened in March 2022, successfully combining historic character with modern hospitality.
