Former National School, Bushmills

Consarc was appointed in December 2023 as Conservation Architect to develop feasibility proposals for the Former National School and to submit a Planning Application and Listed Building Consent on behalf of the Bushmills Trust.

The project involves the careful refurbishment of the historic school building, together with a contemporary two-storey extension to accommodate assembly and recreational use. Targeted alterations to the existing boundary walls also form part of the proposals.

The design strategy ensures the retention of the building’s principal open-plan space, preserving its character while creating a flexible environment for community use. The new extension is designed to house all primary services and amenities, enabling the original structure to function efficiently without compromising its spatial integrity. Enlarged window openings will facilitate improved circulation between the existing building and the proposed extension, strengthening the connection to the rear of the site.
