Guildhall, Derry/Londonderry

Consarc led the award-winning full restoration of the Grade A listed Guildhall in Derry, re-establishing it as a vibrant focal point for civic and cultural life. Constructed in 1887, the building had suffered significant deterioration of its sandstone exterior and underused interior spaces. Following a detailed conservation plan, Consarc implemented the works in a phased approach.

The first phase addressed the external fabric, with specialist craftspeople conserving and replacing intricate sandstone carvings, cleaning each elevation, and repairing the copper roof of the landmark clocktower. The Guildhall’s unique stained glass windows, reflecting the city’s historic ties to the London guilds, were restored on site and in specialist workshops.

The second phase transformed the interior, introducing a new lift and reconfigured circulation to achieve full accessibility. Public areas were enhanced with a riverside café, an exhibition on the Plantation, and a tourist information point. The Council Chamber was reinstated in its original location, with its ornate ceiling restored to former grandeur. By combining sensitive conservation with modern facilities, the Guildhall now preserves Derry’s heritage while serving the needs of a modern, inclusive city.
