Glenveagh National Park Visitor Experience

Consarc Design Group was appointed in 2018 as lead consultant for a multidisciplinary team tasked with developing the Visitor Experience Development and Management Plan for Glenveagh National Park. Working in partnership with the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht and Fáilte Ireland, the project aims to support Glenveagh’s sustainable growth as a visitor destination while protecting its significant ecological and cultural heritage.

The plan draws on extensive consultation with park staff, public bodies, local communities and tourism specialists. It outlines ways to spread visitor activity more evenly across the park, easing pressure on sensitive areas. Key proposals include a new entrance hub and trailhead, re-use of service buildings, and the design of a modern visitor centre with a restaurant, shop, educational spaces and improved facilities. The trail network will be upgraded and new interpretive features such as viewing points introduced, encouraging deeper connection with Glenveagh’s landscape and history. Conservation works are also planned for key historic buildings, including the castle. The strategy supports wider national tourism goals that seek to improve visitor experiences while ensuring long-term care for natural and cultural assets.
