Catholic Chaplaincy QUB, Belfast

The B+ listed Catholic Chaplaincy on Elmwood Avenue at Queen’s University Belfast has undergone a major restoration and extension to support its continued role within campus life. Originally completed in 1972 as a distinctive modernist landmark, the building required significant renewal and adaptation. This investment by the Diocese of Down and Connor, led by Consarc, will safeguard the Chaplaincy’s architectural character while introducing essential contemporary upgrades.

The project has provided high-quality student accommodation along with enhanced communal spaces, a welcoming café-style reception area, meeting facilities and dedicated pastoral zones. The chapel itself has been reimagined with the help of Centro Ave, Italian liturgical artists, allowing it to be retained as the spiritual heart of the project. Carefully considered interventions have improved performance, accessibility and long-term sustainability, ensuring the building meets modern standards while retaining its unique identity.

The Chaplaincy re-opened Summer 2026, with a full rededication of the chapel and the student accommodation in time for the new academic year. The project has established a vibrant campus hub, strengthening the Chaplaincy’s role as a welcoming and sustainable centre for spiritual life and community engagement at QUB.
