City Assembly Building, Dublin

Consarc led the refurbishment of the City Assembly Building on William Street South, Dublin 2, transforming this important 18th-century protected structure into the new headquarters of the Irish Georgian Society. Formerly the city’s Civic Museum, the building had remained closed since 2003 due to fire safety and accessibility issues. The project focused on restoring the building for contemporary use while bringing back its original octagonal exhibition space.

In collaboration with Dublin City Council and planning authorities, the team upgraded the building’s services to meet current regulations without undermining its historic character. The octagonal room was reinstated as a climate-controlled exhibition space, now suitable for hosting exhibitions, performances and public events. The project returns the building to active use in the city centre, preserving its historic value while making it fit for purpose. It was awarded the RIAI Overall Award for Conservation and Adaptive Reuse in 2019 in recognition of its sensitive and effective transformation.
